Floyd Hartford, Connecticut A collage artist, Joy Floyd utilizes fabrics, papers, metal, wood and other natural materials in her work where the material itself is the focus, not the preconceived idea. Crediting the spontaneity in the art of young children, her own and others, as the inspiration for her interest in collage, Floyd seeks to present the beauty of discarded things in a painterly way. She recognizes that found materials have a history and are already works in progress, prepared for the artist by the outside world. She says, "When I find something wonderful, it gives me the courage to begin a new work. I try to open my eyes to the beauty inherent in a used, discarded thing; and to retain in my collage the integrity of the old material while restoring it to a new life." Joy Floyd is long time member of Artworks Gallery in Hartford, and of Silvermine Guild of Artists. Her most recent exhibition was a collaboration with two other collage artists at 100 Pearl Street Gallery. She has exhibited at Artworks Gallery, the Pump House Gallery, Small Walls Gallery, Capital Community and Technical College, Hartford Seminary, and the lnterchurch Center in New York. In 1998, she was the recipient of an Artist Fellowship from the State ot Connecticut Commission on the Arts."I have been inspired by the work of Joseph Cornell, and find myself involved in what he called the ‘sacred search of looking and finding materials, resolving the puzzle, and putting the pieces together to present a reclaimed truth to the world."
