Statement
My life as an artist has two equally important components, creator and teacher. My work includes large organic abstracts, landscapes in watercolor and acrylic, smaller computer generated work, pen and ink drawings, etchings, monoprints and photography. As an artist and teacher, I believe in developing new ideas through experimentation. I often find new creative directions and insight by using various media. What recently started as an exploration of oil paints and oil sticks has led to compositions that are personally satisfying.
My students and followers realize that color is an important element in my paintings. In my new body of work, Modern Cave Paintings, color is of lesser importance. The stronger elements are texture and line. These paintings may surprise those who think of me as a colorist. They surprise me.
The work comes from a part of my psyche that gives me great enjoyment – a place of humor and whimsy, a place which captures for me a sense of time and timelessness. I believe that the work contrasts the solid sense of the past and the frenetic, but often humorous nature of modern day life. This experience of contrast is dramatically heightened by viewing the painting up close and in relation to each other. |
